Nibbl ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the Nibbl app, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data. By using Nibbl, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

Account information — your name and email address when you register. Passwords are stored as one-way hashed values; we never store your password in plain text.
Location data — when you choose "Use my current location", we request access to your device's GPS location. This is used solely to find nearby restaurants and venues. We do not store your precise GPS coordinates on our servers; only a general location preference (city or neighbourhood) is saved to your profile.
Usage data — venues you swipe right on (favourites), venues you swipe left on (dislikes), your cuisine preferences, search radius, and daily swipe activity. This data powers your personalised experience.
Group data — names of groups you create or join, invite codes, and swipe decisions made within group sessions.
Subscription status — whether your account is on the free or premium tier. We do not store credit card numbers or payment details on our servers.

2. How We Use Your Information

To display relevant restaurant and venue recommendations near you.
To save your favourites, dislikes, and preferences across sessions.
To enable group swiping features and match venues your group agrees on.
To enforce daily swipe limits and subscription tier features.
To authenticate your account securely.
To improve app performance and fix issues.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your data for advertising.

3. Location Permissions

Nibbl requests access to your device location only when you explicitly choose the "Use my current location" option during onboarding or in settings. You may instead choose a location manually using the map picker, in which case no location permission is required.

We request foreground location access only ("while using the app"). We do not track your location in the background. You can revoke location permission at any time in your device's Settings app; the app will continue to work using your manually selected location.

4. Third-Party Services

Nibbl uses the following third-party services to deliver its features:

Google Places API — to search for restaurants and venues near your location. Your search coordinates are sent to Google to retrieve results. See Google's Privacy Policy.
OpenStreetMap / Nominatim — to convert GPS coordinates to a human-readable location name (reverse geocoding). See OSM's Privacy Policy.

5. Data Retention

We retain your account and preference data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, all associated data — including favourites, dislikes, swipe history, and group memberships — is permanently deleted within 30 days.

Anonymised, aggregated usage statistics (e.g. total swipes per day) may be retained indefinitely as they cannot be linked back to any individual.

6. Data Security

All data in transit is encrypted using TLS. Passwords are hashed using bcrypt before storage. We use industry-standard practices to protect your data, but no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's Privacy

Nibbl is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights:

Access — request a copy of the data we hold about you.
Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate data.
Deletion — request deletion of your account and all associated data.
Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
Objection — object to certain processing of your data.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. We will notify you of material changes via the app or email.
